Medium 199 (M199 medium) with Earle's Salts was developed in 1950 as a defined nutritional source for cell cultures. It is utilized for cultivation of many cell types as well as vaccine production, virology, and other in vitro cell culture applications.

This formulation of Medium 199 is supplemented with L-Glutamine. When supplemented correctly, Medium 199 has a broad species applicability.
